Skiing In Austria - The Guide

Austria is a perfect resort for skiers. It houses popular courses and incredibly fresh air which has attracted some life long ski fans. The Austrian people themselves are wonderful hosts to the stunning scenery and varied ski runs and pistes.

Situated on the River Inn, Inssbruck is famous former Olympic city surrounded by imposing mountains, crating a dramatic backdrop for skiing. It has no less than nine ski areas offering almost 300 kilometres of piste offering some exhilarating runs. Few towns are better served for aprs-ski fun and partying than Innsbruck.

Kitzbuhel is an ideal ski resort all year round and houses the famou Hahnekamm race which is a must-see for ski fans. The nightlife here is legendary in this stunning Tyrolean wonderland, and the lift passes here cover many different resorts.

Mayrhofen has no less than 233 kilometres of piste, spread out across the vast expanse of resorts it encompasses, all of which are connected by a free bus service. For the thrill seekers there is the thrilling Back Run which runs roughly twenty two kilomtres, causing the region to merge into the enormous Zillertal 300.

As far as aprs-ski goes, the amount of bars, restaurants and clubs makes for one of the most exhilarating scenes of any European resort.

Obertauern is a better choice for families and groups of friends, and enjoys a fantastic location shrouded by the jagged peaks of the Radstadter Mountains. The Green Circuit has numerous open slopes best suited to first-timers and intermediates rather than advanced skiers, though the Pink Circuit is more demanding and challenging than the others. The highly developed aprs-ski will offer something for everyone, and the region is handy for the fairy tale city of Salzburg.

Soll is full of charming traditional guest houses and inns for any budget, which has been attracting English skiers for years.

The lift system has recently been improved, offering a range of access of more than 250 kilometres of piste. While there is plenty for the experienced skier to do, the resort is caters more for novices and intermediates, boasting an excellent range of nursery slopes. The aprs-ski is lively and congenial, and not so hard on the wallet.
